STAR WARS AND THE SALSA

Picking up where I left off last, we left Starbucks to make our way down 5th avenue in Playa del Carmen towards the shuttle pick up to take us back to the hotel, and loved everything we saw along the way. The atmosphere on this Main Street was so full of culture. There were high end shops with of course some tourists shops filled with shot glasses and shirts mixed in, as well as lots of restaurants, all with tons of outdoor seating. Lots of fancy restaurants and sports bars, along with places like Tequila Barrel and Señor Frogs lined the streets. We were stopped by people trying to sell tours, ask if we want taxis, and even by someone who said he recognized us from Señor frogs the night before - think he had us confused?!? Even though we wish we had more time to explore downtown Playa, we needed to make the last shuttle of the day back to the hotel to avoid another $25 cab ride!

We made it back to the hotel in time to grab a quick snack at the dinner buffet and head back to our room (where we found the towel creation over to the left) to get ready for the nightly show. Although we had gone to the theater show our first night - Friday - and weren't very impressed, Sunday's show was awesome! The theme of the show was Las Vegas, so the show was a mash up of all different Vegas performers. Songs by Cher and Michael Jackson and dances like The Lord of the Dance and Blues Brothers were some of the acts. We were quite impressed and decided we would try to make it back for more of the nightly performances.

Unfortunately, the friends we were planning on going into downtown Playa with were unable to make it after their show, and since we hadn't purchased tickets or arranged for any other form of transportation, we couldn't make it downtown. So, next best option: the resort club, the Star Wars themed "Galaxy". We grabbed a drink at the hotel lobby bar before heading over to the club to check it out. While the theme seemed way cheesy, we had heard it was fun and that not only resort visitors, but employees also made this place a party each night. Well...Sunday night must not have been that night. Upon walking into the club, you are greeted with - excuse my lack of Star Wars knowledge - a life size version of one of the big white robot looking things. Head around the corner to a club trying to look like outer space, with stars everywhere and Star Wars characters hanging from the ceiling, and a dance floor consisting of about 10 people that you could barely see due to the overdone smoke machine in the corner. Let's just say this was going to be entertaining. We immediately went to the bar for a tequila shot and a drink, and decided who cares, we are on vacation before hitting the dance floor. We ran into a bachelorette party we had met earlier in the night (another destination wedding happening Tuesday) and gave then a lesson on how to Wobble. After that exhausting dance, we all went for another group shot. At this point, we had enough "I am your father" based pick up lines and decided to call it a night.

We were able to sleep in Monday morning thankfully, and woke up well rested and ready for some sun! After another delicious breakfast in the buffet, we headed for the pool. We knew that there was a "beach party" (limbo included) happening in the afternoon, so we thought a couple hours at the pool would be nice before heading to the sand. Nothing too exciting at the pool, just laying out and a couple drinks by the swim up bar. Then, down to the beach. We had already decided that we would strictly be watching - not participating - in the limbo games. Let's be honest, after a week full of buffets, sweets, and sugary drinks, we were not about to bend like that in a bikini! So, while watching limbo at the beach party, we made a few more margaritas. The beach party ended around 2, and with pool activities starting at 3, we walked back in the direction. Of course, there was a pit stop at the snack bar for some fries and ice cream - oh so healthy!

Now, at this point, we had made the same mistake we did on Saturday. We have had just enough to drink to be convinced that these pool games and dance lessons are a good idea! The pool games for this day were basketball shooting from the pool deck into the pool, so we decided this wouldn't be too bad and both tried it. I was close with my three shots, but no luck to make it into round 2 - back to the pool bar! Then, we were once again convinced by one of the Star friends to join in the dance lesson, today's lesson was the salsa! At first, we were doing well. The basic dance step was easy enough, but trying to put the hip movements into it like the instructor did seemed impossible to me. Oh well, I will stick to looking like a robot when I do it. Now, time to couple up and try to do this dance with someone else. Kelly was grabbed by one of the star friends and I partnered up with a woman who I had been laughing with in the background the entire lesson so far. My new friend and I tried to do the dance for all of about 2 minutes before deciding to give up and go take a tequila shot at the pool bar while watching everyone else do the rest of the dance. This was definitely the way to go, as we realized what a fool everyone else looked like while trying to do that dance.

When the pool games were over, rain seemed to be close so we decided a quick nap and getting ready for dinner would be a good idea. We went to the shopping mall on the resort property to get tacos for dinner from the included taco bar. They were delicious - I had 3 small tacos, all different types. One beef, one pork, and one chicken and shrimp taco. Then, we stopped by the creperie at the mall for a dessert. The crepes were handmade in front of us and ice cream added. We got a chocolate and caramel filled crepe with strawberry ice cream - delicious! After getting ready and taking a short nap, we decided to go to the nightly show again. Tonight's theme was movie night, so it included scenes and dances from Spiderman, Madagascar, Shrek, and many more. Not as good as the Vegas themed show, but still entertaining. Unfortunately, the nap had put me to sleep and I was ready to go to bed right after the show. That's just what we are doing now - time for bed. Tomorrow we head to Xichen Itza for the day - very excited, so I better get my rest. These last couple days in Mexico should be fun-filled!
